The Group welcomed back the Chernobyl’s Children charity on Wednesday 16th August for a fourth year. 12 teenagers aged between 13 and 15, all having problems from various cancers due to the nuclear fallout 30+ years ago, arrived at Lowlands stables at 11 with their own doctor and translators, where horses and our team of volunteers were ready to take them riding. Whilst 6 were riding showing their skill in steering around poles which finished with a gymkhana game, the other half were given a session on ‘Charley’ the mechanical horse. All enjoyed the different feelings of riding a real horse as on ‘Charley’ they were able to trot and canter across their chosen path, farm, beach or field. They also decorated horseshoes to take home as a momento. They are staying near Solihull whilst undergoing optical, dental and medical check-ups. As well as health checks the charity organises various fun activities such as biking, horseriding, arts & crafts and picnics and buying them clothes. We look forward to welcoming them back in 2018.
